Black mould in a bedroom (usually on an outside wall, around a window, or behind furniture) is a symptom. Wiping it kills the visible growth for a few weeks, but unless the moisture source is fixed, it returns.
The three usual causes
- Condensation: warm indoor air meeting a cold wall. Common behind wardrobes and in corners with poor airflow. (Condensation or damp? How to tell.)
- A leak: a slow pipe or roof leak keeping the wall wet from inside. If the patch is isolated, growing, or paired with a stain, think leak first: leak detection.
- Penetrating or rising damp: failed pointing, gutters, or a bridged damp course. A damp survey separates these properly.
Why it matters for health
Persistent mould affects air quality and can aggravate respiratory conditions. It’s why social-housing standards now take mould seriously. Sleeping in a mouldy room is worth fixing properly, not cosmetically.

The professional route
A mould inspection identifies the species-risk level and (more importantly) the moisture source driving it, followed by professional treatment and the fix that stops it returning. If you’re a tenant or landlord, our written reports document cause and responsibility fairly.
