Damp, mould and leaks across north London
North London in its widest sense is everything north of the Thames and the City, running out from Clerkenwell and Finsbury on the edge of the financial district to the boundary with Hertfordshire. On this site the inner boroughs of Camden and Islington are listed under central London, and north London means the three outer boroughs of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey: Cricklewood and Hendon in the west, Edmonton in the north east, Crouch End, Finsbury Park and Wood Green in between.
The 2021 Census counted about 375,000 households across the three boroughs. Just under half own their home and a third rent privately. The stock is evenly split between houses and flats: 22 % semi-detached, 22 % terraced, 34 % in purpose-built blocks and 14 % in converted houses, with Barnet carrying most of the inter-war semis and Haringey most of the Victorian terraces that have been cut into flats.
The investigations that bring us north most often are leaks between converted flats in Haringey and Barnet, penetrating damp through the solid brick of older terraces, bay-window and chimney defects on the inter-war semis, and mould in rented rooms where heating and ventilation have not kept pace with occupancy. Every borough below links to its own page and to the neighbourhoods within it that have a page of their own.
