Damp, mould and leaks across west London
West London is the part of the capital north of the Thames and west of the City, running out to the Greater London boundary, and historically it was part of Middlesex. On this site it means four boroughs: Hammersmith and Fulham on the inner edge, with Fulham, Hammersmith and Shepherd’s Bush; Hounslow, which includes Chiswick; Ealing, with Southall and Greenford; and Hillingdon on the outer boundary.
The 2021 Census counted about 427,000 households across the four. Just under half own their home and a third rent privately. Semi-detached houses are 24 % of the stock and terraces 21 %, with purpose-built flats at 36 % and converted flats at 13 %. The converted flats are concentrated in Hammersmith and Fulham, the semis in Ealing, Hounslow and Hillingdon.
The work divides the same way. In the inner borough it is mostly leaks between flats in Victorian terraces that have been divided, and damp at lower-ground level. Further out it is the inter-war house: bay roofs, chimneys, rendered elevations and suspended floors, together with condensation and mould in homes that have been extended or had their windows replaced without matching ventilation. Each borough below links to its own page and to the places within it that have one.
